In life, there are things we plan and things that happen, good and bad, whether we like it or not.

Since those (bad) events can arise in an instant, if you haven’t yet coordinated you and your pet emergency preparedness, from first-aid knowledge to evacuation plans, there’s no better time to start than today.

Pet Emergency Preparedness — Evacuation

In most parts of the world, there is the potential for a variety of natural disasters: earthquakes, fires, tornados, floods, etc.

Do you have a plan to evacuate your home with your pets in a hurry? Do you have enough supplies to quarantine with your pets either in your home or at another location for at least 7-10 days if not longer?

In case you need to evacuate your home, you should have:

  • An easily accessible and transportable emergency kit with enough food, water (purification tablets), and supplies for you and your pets, including their travel kennels.
  • An emergency evacuation plan and practice your emergency evacuation drill with your family, including any and all pets.

You will also want to know:

  • Your pets, including your cats, will come to you when called*
  • The other items you need/want to grab, time permitting — Create a checklist and keep it pinned on your refrigerator

Here is a shortlist of items you should have in your emergency pack for your pets:

Dog

Dog First Aid and Pet Emergency Preparedness

• Dog First Aid Book
• Food (enough for at least 7-10 days — Remember to regularly check expiration dates)
• Bowls (one for food one for water)
• Leash
• Collar/Harness and ID Tags
• Carrier/Kennel
• Seat Belt (see my post about my favorite product at http://feetandpaws.com/safest-way-to-drive-with-your-dog/)
• Dog Booties (in case the terrain is hot, cold, or hard to manage)
• Canned Food Covers

Cat

Dog First Aid and Pet Emergency Preparedness

• Cat First Aid Book
• Food (enough for at least 3-7 days — Remember to regularly check expiration dates)
• Bowls (one for food, one for water)
• Collar/Harness with ID Tags
• Leash
• Car Safe Carrier/Kennel (see my post about my favorite product at http://feetandpaws.com/safest-way-to-drive-with-your-dog/)
• Potty Bags
• Canned Food Covers

 

Overall (for both Cats and Dogs)

Pet Emergency Preparedness

• Strong Come Command (Watch my tutorial video -HERE-)
• Emergency Blanket
• Sleeping Bag
• First Aid Kit
• Laminated Photos of Pets for Lost Posters
• Copies of Pet Proof of Ownership
• Copies of Recent Vaccines/Medical Records
• Wet Ones
• Water (enough for 3-7 days, typically at least a few gallons for them as well as a few for you)
• Water Purification Tablets
• Medications
• List of regional Pet and Dog-Friendly Hotels in case emergency shelters cannot accommodate you and your pets
