"Mom, let's take a break in the shade."

Good idea, Neah. Thanks for letting me know you were getting warm ☀️.

Always listen to your dog! Neah was stopping to sniff more frequently, and then specifically stopping to sniff in the shade, and then just stopping in the shade.

By this point having noticed her signals, I had already turned us around and we took a few nice, relaxing water breaks in the shade on our way back to the car 🚗.

As we head into warmer weather, take precautions when you head out on any adventure with your dog...

✅ Check the temperature and if it's going to be warm, head out early, later in the evening, or consider not bringing your dog
✅ Water and snacks for you and your dog
✅ Cooling vest and water to soak it in
✅ Emergency dog carrier (like if they were to be airlifted or carrier in your back)
✅ Prepare a plan that you can abort

From walking nicely on leash and basic dog obedience, like sit and down, to life-saving commands stay, come, and leave it, my classes focus on using positive reinforcement to establish good habits and eliminate bad behaviors.

Dolly and her mom are beginning their loose leash

Dolly and her mom are beginning their loose leash walking journey* ♥️, which can take 6+months even with consistent practice 🤯. This makes sense when you consider all the exciting things outside and how long we'd like her to perform this behavior (typically 20+ minutes).

Because Dolly has no idea what we want, it will involve a lot of back and forth. More importantly, it will include luring Dolly where we'd like her to be, at her mom's side, followed by praise and rewards.

*Dolly is reactive and on the dense urban streets I teach a loose leash/heel combo that still allows the dog to be a part of the walk conversation 😉.

To continue to work on Neah's reactivity we have been going to the parking lot of the nearby private off-leash dog park (not inside 😉).

Each visit allows me to desensitize and counter-condition her emotional response to seeing and hearing other dogs run and play in a controlled environment.

This is 1 year old Dolly. Her mom rescued her from the streets 5 months ago. Though we don't know her past, we do know she has anxiety around strangers, guests, dogs, and quite a number of things outside and in (UPS delivery or boogie man 👻?).

This could be from bad experiences or no experiences that helped her feel calm and confident around new things when she was young and impressionable.

I'm even a scary stranger to her 🫤. So, after guiding her mom through some exercises and discussing some key reactivity games and techniques, she got to work between our sessions.

During just our second session together Dolly was choosing to come to me on her own for rewards.

It's happening. I am the cheese lady!! ... and more importantly Dolly is learning to feel differently about things that currently scare her.

First (in-person) day of Puppy Class!

It's always exciting to meet the dogs and begin using the information shared during the online orientation to start establishing important skills like come, sit-stay, and loose leash walking.

"My dog won't come when called." Come is one of t

"My dog won't come when called."

Come is one of the most requested behaviors from my clients, and for good reason because it is a life-saving skill.

It's a simple behavior...but simple isn't always easy 😉.

After showing Lima's Dad the steps he started practicing with her (indoors with little to no distractions). He calls out her name, then immediately says, "Come!" in a loud but welcoming tone and is ready to reward her lavishly ♥️. Woohoo!

There are a few things to tweak (Lima has body handling sensitivities and isn't ready for the collar grab disguised as a massage yet, and she's not convinced she shouldn't take off after getting her 'reward'), but he (and her mom) are taking the time to learn the steps, practice, and gradually increase the difficulty of this important skill just in case they may need it in an emergency. Ounce of prevention, pound of cure!
